Leonard Lodoen - Dad and Grandpa
March 17, 1937 - February 16, 2023
Our History
The very beginning of the L83 Ranch goes back to 1951 when a young cattle enthusiast found himself buying his very first 4H steer. Leonard Lodoen never would have expected what the future had in store for him and his family after this first venture. Leonard, along with brother Myron, began Lodoen Hereford Farms where they had been known across the USA and Canada. In 1994, Lodoen Hereford Farms began the transition into Lodoen Cattle Company when they purchased our first Red Angus cows from Charlie and Linda Lewis of Rock Creek Red Angus in Joliet, Montana. This crazy choice, made by a reputable horned Hereford breeder, was followed through by using his intelligence to learn the pedigrees, persistence to understand EPDs, and ambition to thrive in the Red Angus breed. During these next years, Lodoen Cattle Company has grown and expanded into what is now L83 Ranch.
Our Program
L83 Ranch consists of 200 purebred Red Angus cows in which we select our own replacement females to put back into our herd, and raise bulls for the Annual Production Sale which is held on the 3rd Tuesday of March at Kist Livestock in Mandan, ND. We strive to maintain a healthy, highly presentable, and docile cow herd. We have a fair amount of Canadian genetic influence in our herd, which has pleased us. The combination of the American and Canadian genetics was a choice we made in order to keep our gene pool diverse, and also, to take advantage of the traits that all of the genetics and pedigrees bring forth.
Our Goal
At L83, we have many goals that we push ourselves to reach. We thrive to raise cattle that will go out and impact the herd of other purebred breeders, but most of important of all, go out and be able to turn over a profit for the commercial ranchers. Our goal is to continually breed cattle that are sound structured, great uddered, and can raise calves that will go out and be profitable in the commercial herd.
